Even though used games remain a topic of concern for the next-generation systems from Microsoft and Sony, PlayStation fans should be happy to hear that the PS4 could possibly stream PS3 games. Streaming PS3 games would be a major selling point, since the current PlayStation has an extensive product library with hit titles and franchises like God of War, Uncharted, and Infamous. Furthermore, it’d help lessen the pain if the system does indeed restrict the ability to play used games, a feature that even GameStop has voiced their displeasure over.
The trend towards digital distribution is also an area where Sony can turn a negative into a positive. Allowing customers to link their existing PS3′s with the new PS4, and providing the ability to transfer game data, saves, and downloads to the new system would be a a kind gesture and an equally solid business move. Many PS faithful have amassed impressive libraries of games since the system was first released, and while digital downloads have only recently started to gain momentum, many gamers have taken advantage of that convenience and opportunity to fill up their PS3 HD. If gamers knew that they could transfer these purchases and DLC to the next system, it might provide enough incentive to be an early adopter and ignore any used game bans that might exist.
Many of these questions should be answered tomorrow when Sony is expected to unveil the PlayStation 4. In their “tease the future,” campaign, Sony hinted towards a massive product announcement taking place on February 20th.
